October Marks the Start of MIPS Data Validation and Audit (DVA) for 2023 Performance Year

The Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) Data Validation and Audit (DVA) is an essential part of ensuring the accuracy and integrity of MIPS reporting. For the 2023 Performance Year (PY), the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has contracted Guidehouse to conduct these audits. Here's what practice administrators and physicians need to know about the process, the impact, and how Chirpy Bird can help you navigate or mitigate these audits.

What is MIPS DVA?

MIPS DVA is a review process where selected clinicians and groups are required to provide primary source documentation to validate the data they submitted to CMS for the MIPS program. The focus is on ensuring compliance with MIPS reporting requirements and maintaining the program's integrity.

Which Performance Year and Categories Are Covered?

The 2023 MIPS DVA will audit the Quality, Improvement Activities (IA), and Promoting Interoperability (PI) performance categories. The Cost category will not be audited this year.

How Are Clinicians Selected for DVA?

Selection for DVA is random but may include clinicians based on factors such as practice size (large, small), location (urban, rural), and submission methods (EHR, Claims, Registries, etc.). Clinicians who were non-compliant with the previous year’s DVA requirements might also be targeted. If selected, you will be notified through the email associated with your MIPS submission's Tax ID Number (TIN).

Key Dates and Timeline

  • Notification Period: Clinicians selected for DVA will be notified between October 2024 and April 2025.

  • Response Deadlines: Requests will be made in phases and are due within 45 days of the request. The first phase will request population reports, while the second phase will focus on supporting documentation for selected patients.

Potential Impact of MIPS DVA

Failure to comply with DVA requirements can lead to penalties and impact your MIPS score, affecting future Medicare reimbursements. Being unprepared or missing documentation could result in stress, financial loss, and reputational damage.
