2023 MIPS Quality Strategy

It’s the beginning of a new performance year, which means it’s time to choose your quality measures for the period. Why is this so important? Selecting the right quality measures is critical to your MIPS quality performance, and a sound quality strategy is essential to success. A comprehensive approach that includes data collection strategies for each measure, as well as an understanding of standard reporting requirements, can help identify which MIPS quality measures are best suited for your practice.

By selecting quality measures that align with your practice’s goals, you can optimize your performance and increase the likelihood of obtaining a higher quality score. Additionally, it is important to consider the available data sources and reporting tools for each measure to ensure accurate submission. Once all of these factors are taken into consideration, clinicians should be able to select quality measures that will drive MIPS success and an overall good score. Here are some important steps for choosing the right measures for your practice to earn as close to the 60 points as you possibly can in the quality category:

Step 1: Understand the measure specifications – Measure specifications can change from one year to next. If you are using a measure from a previous year, make sure you are documenting all that is required to meet the measure for the current performance period. It is important to prioritize measures that are clinically relevant to your practice and/or specialty.

Step 2: Benchmarks, Benchmarks, Benchmarks – Each measure is worth anywhere from 1-10 points based on the performance rate for each measure. The benchmarks change every year, making it more challenging to earn full points as the MIPS program progresses. If your doctor asks “Why do I have fewer points this year with the same performance rate as last year?,” the answer is “Benchmarks, Benchmarks, Benchmarks”.

Step 3: Check with your EHR/Registry to see what measures they offer – There are over 200 quality measures, but not all EHR/Registries will offer all of them.

The most important aspect of choosing measures is to make sure you are using those that you can document successfully. Follow these simple steps and you will find the right measures for your practice and optimize your chances of earning a high score in the quality category.
